After nine years, Susan Wojcicki is resigning as CEO of YouTube with immediate effect. Neal Mohan, who has been the business's Chief Product Officer for the previous seven years, has been appointed as her replacement.
She stated in a blog post for the firm, "I've decided to stand down from my job as the CEO of YouTube and start a new chapter focused on my family, health, and personal projects I'm passionate about. Wojcicki will now serve as a consultant for both Google and Alphabet.
In her post, Wojcicki praises Mohan's leadership of YouTube Music, Premium, and Shorts, as well as his role in establishing the hugely popular YouTube TV. The Trust and Safety team at the company, which Mohan has overseen, is another point she makes. This team will become even more crucial as "the promises of AI," as she puts it, become a potential area of growth.
It marks the end of an era for YouTube, which under Wojcicki's leadership faced criticism for how it handled hate speech, content moderation, and false information. The network had barely passed one billion users when she started using it in 2014, and "YouTubers" were still seen as curiosities. Now, YouTube has 2.5 billion subscribers worldwide, and its creators have built successful businesses around their channels.
A close friend of Google's co-founders Larry Page and Sergey Brin, Wojcicki was one of the company's first hires. Before taking the helm at YouTube, she "managed marketing, co-created Google Image Search, led Google's first Video and Book search, as well as early parts of AdSense's creation, worked on the YouTube and DoubleClick acquisitions, served as SVP of Ads."
